These flour tortillas as so much better than store bought! My son Brady is in a tortilla phase where he likes all kinds of meat wrapped in a tortillas. Bailey found this recipe and we gave these a try. This was probably the most fun we had cooking together so far. There was a job for everyone and the kids LOVED flipping the tortillas on the skillet!
Whisk flour, salt and baking powder together in a large mixing bowl.
Mix in the lard with your fingers until the flour resembles cornmeal. We found the lard in the hispanic foods isle of our super market. Thought for a minute we might use crisco (cause we were having a hard time locating the lard) but then realized the animal base of the lard would be more tasty than the vegetable base of the crisco.
Add water and mix until the dough forms a ball. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for a bit until smooth and elastic. Divide dough into 24 equal balls.
Preheat a large skillet over medium high heat. Use a well flowered rolling pin to roll the dough into SUPER THIN round tortillas. The thinner the better. This was a good job for the adult while the kids were in charge of flipping tortillas over. Place the thin tortillas on the skillet and cook until bubbly and golden brown.
Flip and cook the other side. Place the cooked tortillas in a tortilla warmer. Continue this process until all the remaining dough in cooked. We used the tortillas for salmon tacos. Had enough left over to leave in the fridge for the rest of the week and Brady and Bailey warmed them up for lunch tacos later. These can also be frozen and used at a later date. Way more delish and fun than store bought! Enjoy!
